What happens if a Presidential nominee can no longer run for office?

The American system of government has some gaps, which is not surprising given how old its founding documents are. The closer we get to election day and, even worse, once past election day, things get less predictable. FiveThirtyEight has laid out what happens if the Presidential candidate can’t run.

As a Michigander, this part was interesting:

I don’t know how that plays out in practice.
